Manchester United’s controversial summer signing Gabriel Obertan is set to make his first start for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. United take on Championship side Barnsley tonight at Oakwell Stadium in the Carling Cup. The French winger was signed by United over the summer from Ligue 1 champions Bordeaux and has impressed during his appearances in the United reserves.

United are set to rest many of their first team stars following their disappointing defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, but Sir Alex Ferguson is relishing seeing some of his young stars in action.

Obertan’s three reserve appearances have excited United fans and coaches alike, and Sir Alex Ferguson has made his intentions clear for Tuesday’s match.

“He will play tomorrow against Barnsley, it is a good start for him,” said Ferguson.
