ryan giggsIn anticipation of World Cup 2010, from time to time Premiership Talk will review some of the interesting topics in international football. This week we’ll start with the list of the ten best players who have never appeared in the World Cup, courtesy of World Cup Odds. You can vote for your choice at their website. Without further adieu…

George Best. Best will forever be remembered for his pace, trickery, and off the pitch antics. There’s no doubting his raw talents, though, and were it not for his Northern Ireland heritage then the world would have been graced with his talents on the biggest stage.

Ryan Giggs. Giggsy, like Best, was unfortunate to be one of the world’s top talents but on a relatively small international team. Wales never has had a reputation for being world beaters, and with his international days now done, Ryan Giggs will never appear in a World Cup. Well, at least he made some good commercials for Umbro…

George Weah. Weah is on this list as the player from the least powerful footballing nation. Liberia is rarely even considered for the World Cup, which was unfortunate for Weah who played for some of the world’s top clubs. Weah was even World Player of the Year before, but never appeared in football’s biggest tournament.

Alfredo di Stefano. di Stefano has been described by some as the world’s greatest ever player. It’s a huge compliment to the former Real Madrid star, but after switching nationalities twice to teams who didn’t qualify for the World Cup, di Stefano missed his chance to shine on the big stage.

Bernd Schuster. Younger fans will remember Schuster as a poor Real Madrid manager, but during his playing days he was one of the greats. Schuster won the 1980 European Championships with Germany, but at the tender age of just 24 he decided to call it quits on the international level.
