Rafa Benitez has offered current Aston Villa striker Emile Heskey a lifeline as the big man tries to cement his spot in Fabio Capello’s upcoming World Cup squad.
Heskey has been out of favor at Villa Park this season, starting only one of Villa’s Premier League fixtures this season and is yet to find the back of the net in his five appearances. Heskey himself has admitted that a move away from Villa Park could be on the cards.
“I will have to sit down and think about my next move. I don’t know whether I can get a World Cup place if I’m not playing for Villa.
“The manager (Capello) hasn’t really spoken to me about it. I just have to keep performing well in training and keep going. But you always wonder about those kind of things, whether it will affect my chances. I will just have to try to address it when the time is right,” said the English striker.
Luckily for Heskey, Liverpool’s interest comes at just the right time. The Daily Star reports that manager Rafa Benitez is keen to bring Heskey back to Anfield, but only at the right price. While Villa manager Martin O’Neill may be hesitant to part with the powerhouse striker, Benitez is rumored to be interested in a £1.5 million deal.
As reports of Liverpool’s interest hit the back pages, Wigan manager Dave Whelan offered further support for the striker. Whelan proclaimed that Heskey would be more than welcome back at the DW Stadium, and the Latics chief was full of praise for Heskey.
“I have a great deal of sympathy for him – he is one wonderful footballer. When he is on the park you know you are going to get 110% from Emile,” said Whelan.
“I absolutely thought he was fantastic for us but he was coming to the end of his contract but he wanted to move on so I honoured that.”
”Everybody in football would like Emile somewhere in their squad. He is that kind of lad. But I’d be very surprised if Aston Villa sell him and I still think he has got a good future at Villa.”
Would Heskey be a good fit at Liverpool or a Robbie Keane-esque flop? Have your say below!

Heskey could make plenty of room for Torres to operate in! he’s done it for Owen (Liverpool/England) and Rooney(England).
worth the gamble at 1.5 mil.
a different type of forward than what we currently have at Liverpool which allows the system to change.
Bring back Heskey I think it would work well with Torres, and it would be a good bit of business for 1.5 million
