Patience is a virtue, and for two of the Premier League’s best players, that patience has finally paid off. The crazy thing about it all? These two players are on the same team! And the lucky team is Sunderland.
It was just last season that Sunderland were in the heat of the relegation battle. Everybody knew that Sunderland had a talented side, and everybody was wondering why they were floundering in the bottom part of the table. This season (so far at least) has been all about the revival of the Black Cats, and this is a testament to the work that has been put in by their two prolific goalscorers.
To say that Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones have been great this season would be a gross understatement. Both of these players are playing at the highest of levels. The argument could certainly be made that Bent and Jones are the best striker tandem in the world at the moment. Drogba and Anelka come to mind, but the argument is still there. This past weekend was only one of several instances that have proven their dominance together.
The Black Cat Duo have been the sole reason why Sunderland are where they are at this point in the season. Through eight Premier League matches, Sunderland have scored a total of sixteen goals. Bent and Jones have been responsible for twelve of them (Bent 7, Jones 5). So why did it take so long for these two to get their due? All of my other Wednesday Wonders have done something miraculous one week, but then reverted back to their regular playing style the next week. Meanwhile, Kenwyne Jones and Darren Bent have been consistently amazing week in and week out. I knew that they would keep their performance up, so I decided to let them build up a strong Wednesday Wonder resume.
With that in mind, Bent and Jones have gone out every week this season and impressed any and all Premier League fans. If one of them isn’t on the score sheet at the end of the day, we are all surprised. That is why it was no surprise to see them making their mark against Manchester United at Old Trafford. These boys led their squad into Manchester, and almost left with a victory. Had it not been for an Anton Ferdinand own goal, they would’ve.
Their dominance seems as though it will never slow down. They will be a pleasure for fans to watch the rest of the season, but a nightmare for opposing teams. Should they keep this up, Sunderland will look to be sitting pretty close to the top of the table by the end of the season. Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones, you have been extremely patient, and it is only fitting that both of you are this week’s Premiership Talk Wednesday Wonders. Congratulations, and keep those goals coming!
Have they finally earned their Wednesday Wonder crown? Can they keep up this consistency for the rest of the season? Voice your opinions below!

Kenwyn is big, powerful in the air and deceptively fast but like many of his nationality is so laid back that motivation is a constant problem. His injury in a friendly match caused by James in a ludicrously vigorous clash, delayed his rise as one of the country’s best strikers. His confidence is returning and if he increases his work ethic and ruthless commitment to scoring he will improve. Bent with his speed and inherent lust for scoring has been a revelation. Together they create panic in the best of defences who frequently underestimate them.
It is unfair however to equally underestimate how much the rest of the team are contributing to the duo’s success. Reid and Malbranque are this year able to provide a superb service to the strikers because we now have a solid defence. With the confidence our C force Catts and Cana give it leaves our attack free to do their job. Bruce has made many changes and still has not got the defence working the way he wishes so there is a long way to go but mid table or above will be a brilliant start to establishing our team as a regular premiership club
