Fabio Capello has named his 24 man roster for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Belarus. There are no real surprises in Capello’s squad, but Ben Foster will be ruing the fact that his chance has come and gone. Meanwhile, David Beckham will be delighted at his inclusion once again, and Aaron Lennon’s fine form is rewarded.
Robert Green, David James, and Paul Robinson are the three goalkeepers that get the call this time, and James will surely want to improve on his club form. Green has been steady in the English nets thus far and is expected to get the nod in at least one of the qualifiers.
Wes Brown is included once again and is joined by Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand. League leaders Chelsea are represented by John Terry and Ashley Cole, while Joleon Lescott and Wayne Bridge represent Mark Hughes’s rampant City side. Liverpool’s Glen Johnson and West Ham’s Matthew Upson complete the backline.
The usual suspects make up England’s midfield, as Gareth Barry retains his spot and is joined by teammate Shaun Wright-Phillips and cross-town rival Michael Carrick. David Beckham makes the trek from Los Angeles to join up with the squad, and he’ll be teaming up once again with Chelsea’s dynamic Frank Lampard and Liverpool’s talisman Steven Gerrard. Aaron Lennon and James Milner give an added dimension of width in Capello’s squad.
Capello has chosen the Premier League’s in form strikers while also refusing to drop the aging Emile Heskey. Heskey is joined by Villa teammate Gabriel Agbonlahor, and the red hot Carlton Cole hopes to strengthen his claim for a spot in South Africa. Tottenham’s Peter Crouch and United’s Wayne Rooney round out the squad.
