Just four and a half matches into James McFadden’s return to the Premier League, fate has struck in a not so friendly manner. Halfway through Birmingham City’s clash with Aston Villa in the Second City Derby, McFadden, the Blues’ fearless leader, was carted off the field. All reports have indicated that he has a torn thigh muscle.
This is certainly not good news for a Birmingham squad that has amassed a mere two goals over the first five matches. The ruling, for the moment, is that the Scotland international will be missing the Blues’ next five matches in addition to Scotland’s international friendly against Japan coming up in October.
All of this bad news is coming at the wrong time. Right when Birmingham is looking for that spark to get their season going, their leader is hurt and will be out for an extended period of time. Things are looking bleak in the Second City, and it seems that matters are set to only get worse in the coming weeks. Blues fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery, but that seems unlikely given the severity of the injury.
