Portsmouth goalkeeper David James believes that Pompey have enough quality in their current squad to survive in the Premier League. Five games into the season Portsmouth find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table with five losses. On Saturday Portsmouth hosted Bolton at Fratton Park and suffered to a 3-2 loss.
David James, though, was pleased with the result, and pointed to Portsmouth’s newfound goalscoring ability.
“It sounds silly, but if you are going to lose then at least score goals,” said James. “There is nothing worse than losing 1-0 and feeling there is no way you are going to score.
“Bolton’s first goal was pretty much straight from a free-kick, their second was a dubious penalty and the third was offside.
“You take their goals out and we would have been the winners.
“At the moment we deserve to be where we are in the table because we haven’t got anything out of the games.
“But I think we’ll be all right. I’ve seen enough to suggest the talent and the quality is there. We just have to put it together in the right order and get the results. The sooner we can do that the better, but I am very optimistic.
“Last season we suffered because of the amount of players we had out of contract and the amount of players we had on loan.
“You can always question people’s desire, but most of the squad that have come in have got points to prove, one way or another.”
James’ comments are positive, but a false sense of security doesn’t hide Portsmouth’s large problems. The club is without any proven goalscorers up front, and following the sale of Niko Kranjcar to Tottenham lack any true creativity in midfield.
James may be confident about Portsmouth staying in the top flight, but at the moment there are no other clubs that look as dire as Pompey. The club are going through their worst start to a season in their 111-year history and turmoil surrounds the club’s ownership, manager, finances, and players.
