Both Manchester clubs picked up deserved wins on Saturday as they squared off against two of London’s biggest clubs. Manchester City taught Arsenal a lesson at The City of Manchester Stadium in a 4-2 thrashing as Manchester United enjoyed the best of times at White Hart Lane in a 3-1 win against Tottenham.
Emmanuel Adebayor made the day even more interesting as he launched a scathing attack on the Gunners before kickoff. It appeared as if all the stars in the universe were lining up for an Adebayor goal against his former club, and in the 80th minute the man from Togo put the ball past Manuel Almunia before sprinting across the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans.
The match got started in the 20th minute when a powerful Micah Richards header went off the post, off the back of Manuel Almunia’s head, and into the back of the net. With less than 30 minutes remaining in the match, Robin van Persie brought Arsenal back into the match with a smart finish to make the match 1-1.
It was then Craig Bellamy’s turn to get on the scoresheet as a quick City counterattack was sparked by Shaun Wright Phillips. The wee Englishman ran at the Arsenal defense before laying the ball off to Bellamy who finished in fine fashion. Adebayor’s goal cemented City’s win to make it 3-1 before Shaun Wright-Phillips put salt in Arsenal’s wound to make it 4-1. Tomas Rosicky grabbed a consolation goal to finish the match 4-2.
Down in London, Tottenham did their best to make history repeat itself. In typical Spurs versus United fashion, Tottenham took a lead against the Red Devils as Jermain Defoe scored a stunning bicycle kick goal just 50 seconds into the match. The story from there, though, is often the same.
Just as with last year’s comeback, United came back before too long. Ryan Giggs cleverly scored on a freekick in the 25th minute to level the match before Brazilian midfielder Anderson scored his first goal for United to make it 2-1.
In the second half Tottenham got a boost as a typical Paul Scholes challenge resulted in a second yellow card, forcing the defending Premier League champions to play with ten men. With just twelve minutes remaining in the match, red hot Wayne Rooney continued his excellent goalscoring form as he made it 3-1. “We’ve only got ten men!” was the chant from the traveling United faithful.
The result means that Arsenal is once again struggling in the Premiership while City are staking their claim for a top four spot. United, meanwhile, jump up to second place in the table, followed closely by their cross-town City rivals.
Richards was offside for the first goal. Interestingly, its not talked about anywhere. Or I am wrong?
