Could Burnley be the Hull of this season? Highly unlikely, but only time will tell. That aside, what Burnley did over the past week has been very impressive, and it is certainly Wednesday Wonder material.
It all started midweek last week. Manchester United fans worldwide – myself included – were salivating at the chance to obliterate this newly promoted Burnley side. How quickly we forgot that this Burnley side was the same squad that did major damage to top flight competition in last year’s FA Cup. Burnley did not forget what they were capable of doing. They walked into Turf Moor last Wednesday as confident as ever.
Manchester United had their chances early, but nothing came of them. Burnley played strong as well, and they were rewarded early on as Robbie Blake rocketed a volley right out of the air and into the back of the net. There was nothing Ben Foster could do but dive helplessly trying to make a miraculous save. The save would not happen, and Burnley went up 1-0 in the 18th minute. The lead would not be relinquished. The masses at Turf Moor would not allow it. The team was spurred on to a victory that most people thought impossible. Burnley had upset the defending champions. Chaos erupted throughout the stadium as the final whistle blew, but this was only the beginning.
After three days of rest, Burnley had another big match on their hands. This time they would be facing an Everton team that was ready to turn their fate around after an opening week 6-1 beatdown at the hands of Arsenal. Burnley really didn’t care about Everton’s hurt feelings, though, and they came out with just as much force as the United match. The Clarets’ enthusiasm carried over from that match, and Everton would be unable to put a damper on it.
The lone goal of the match came in the 34th minute when Wade Elliott received the ball just inside the 18-yard box. He then sent a looping curling lefty shot into the far left of the net. Turf Moor went wild once again. This 1-0 lead would also hold, and Burnley now find themselves sitting much higher on the table after three matches than I believe they expected when the schedule was released earlier this summer.
Nonetheless, Burnley has started off strong this season, and we can only hope that they can continue this exciting run every week. Thanks for an exciting week, Burnley! That is why you are this week’s Premiership Talk Wednesday Wonder!
