In a market that is so drastically inflated, managers and clubs have no choice but to seek out bargains. Sir Alex Ferguson secured the shock signing of Michael Owen last week, and another former worldbeater is still available: AC Milan’s Ronaldinho.
Before you dismiss this suggestion, think about it. Ronaldinho was, undeniably, the world’s greatest player just five years ago. The Brazilian magician has built his entire career on skill and unpredictability. No one but Ronaldinho himself knows what is coming next – no-look passes, elasticos, and stepovers are just a few of the tools that ‘Dinho has in his arsenal. Speed and pace, however, have never played a massive role in his success.
Now, Ronaldinho finds himself disgraced and off the pitch. His minutes for AC Milan are no longer guaranteed, the Brazilian national team no longer calls his name, and the advertisements seldom feature his smiling face.
With the economic crisis well and truly here, clubs are looking all over the globe for players that are cheap and talented. Signing Ronaldinho may be a risk, but it’s a risk that could be worthwhile. All Ronaldinho needs is a new challenge and motivation. With so many great motivators in the world of football today, surely someone can bring this magician back to his best? Sir Alex Ferguson? Jose Mourinho? I think they should fancy a punt…
