Just yesterday Manchester United signed former Wigan midfielder Antonio Valencia for a staggering £16 million. With Cristiano Ronaldo choosing to enjoy sunnier shores, the defending Premier League champions were keen to fill the gap left on the Old Trafford flanks. They chose to go with the man from Ecuador.
My question to Sir Alex Ferguson and the rest of the Premier League is: why doesn’t anyone want Stewart Downing!? This is a guy that was being chased after by some of England’s top clubs just years ago, and he has often been tipped as the man to solve England’s left wing problem.
Middlesbrough’s relegation means that the winger is available at a bargain basement price. Boro are apparently asking for just £10 million for Downing, and in this market that price is outstanding.
Downing could have made a valiant effort at solving Manchester United’s problems on the wings, but other top clubs are overlooking him as well. Surely Stewart would complement Joe Cole on the opposite flank at Chelsea, or provide another attacking threat at Arsenal for a price that even Arsene Wenger would be happy with.
As it stands, it’s just Liverpool and Tottenham battling for this relegated star. Both clubs have been interested in Downing for some time now, and after fulfilling his promise to Boro, it’s time for him to move on and assert himself at a top club.
Do you think Downing could cut it at a top club? Have your say below!
