After completing the signing of Antonio Valencia from Wigan, Sir Alex Ferguson is now targetting a replacement for the departed Carlos Tevez.
According to Benzema’s Lyon teammate Miralem Pjanic, the French striker is closing in on a move to the Premiership champions.
“Benzema is nearly gone to Old Trafford,” Pjanic told Bosnian website Sportsport.
“The English club are willing to pay €45million (£38million) for him and it is just a question of the day when he will move to England.
“He does not have anything against going to Manchester. Our side will be reinforced by Lisandro Lopez, the Argentine forward from Porto.”
Pjanic’s announcement will be a devastating blow to Manchester United rivals Arsenal and Real Madrid, as both sides were reportedly interested in signing one of this summer’s hottest targets.
Update July 1 – Real Madrid have apparently jumped into pole position for the Lyon striker with a bid of €35 million.
