The 2009 edition of the Confederations Cup is now over, and the surprise story from this past month of action has been the United States of America. Bob Bradley’s young and talented team shocked the world by progressing from the tournament’s group of death, and did one further by upsetting Spain 2-0 in the semifinals.
After their disappointing 3-2 loss to Brazil in the final, the stars of the American team are attracting previously unattainable attention. Jozy Altidore, the 19 year old striker, was one of the surprise packages of the USA’s run, and the Villareal bench-warmer is now looking for a way out.
“I think it’s important that we know wherever we’re going, whatever environment we’re in that we get playing time,” he told Goal.com. “You can’t have guys coming in who haven’t played, like myself. We have to be ready to play. That was a bit tough towards the end of the tournament.”
Jozy made the switch from Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls to Villareal a year ago, but was quickly shipped out on loan to second division Xerez. After a lack of playing time there, he finds himself due back at Villareal, but the youngster is pleading for a move.
“In my mind, I don’t really want to go back there,” he said. “I want to go play somewhere else.”
“I want to find a team where I’m going to play — simple,” he said. “I won’t go back to the Segundo division. I’m just looking for somewhere to play the whole year.”
Could there be a place for young Jozy in the Premier League? With his size and strength, I think so. Fulham…is it time for another American?

Fulham would probably ship him out too, just the way they did with Eddie Johnson. I realize Altidore is a great talent but he is too young to get the kind of playing time he wants in a league like Prem. I would say it’s ideal if he plays in the Dutch Eredevisie or another league in the North West of Europe so that gradually, he makes a smooth transition into a Premier League player.
