Whew, allow me a second to recover. That United States victory over Spain yesterday was something else, and the football world is still a bit in shock. So while David Villa has a little more time than anticipated to figure out his future, the transfer rumor mill is still churning. Here’s what’s going on around the world, or so we think.
Michael Owen and his representatives may have caught a lot of stick for his recent brochure, but it looks like the former Liverpool legend could be on the verge of one last big move.
Defending Premier League champions are presumably interested in the wee man, and Owen could secure the move that he so desperately wants. Fergie sees Owen as the ideal man to fill Carlos Tevez’s shoes on the bench, and Scousers around the world are already preparing to burn their ‘Pool kits.
Rafa Benitez shot himself in the foot last season with his infamous press conference, and the Spanish waiter may be doing it again. After wrapping up a big money move for defender Glen Johnson, Rafacts had this to say: “Sometimes you have to spend a little bit more. You can’t compete in the top four of the Premier League unless you spend some money.”
Xabi Alonso took these words to heart, and the midfielder now expects a significant payrise. Alonso makes just £65,000 a week, while new signing Johnson will take home £90,000 per week. Liverpool may just have to pay up, or Alonso’s future could rest away from Anfield…
When Federico “Kiko” Macheda scored that goal against Aston Villa in the run in to the title, Manchester United fans went nuts over the teenager. Italians, meanwhile, were quick to criticize the English champions, saying that they poached one of Italy’s finest jewels.
Jose Mourinho is now keen to bring Kiko back to Italy, and Inter Milan are set to make a cheeky loan offer for the youngster. Sir Alex Ferguson has other plans, though, with some insiders saying that he doesn’t want to risk Macheda getting too comfortable and requesting a permanent move…
Patrice Evra may have replaced the Heinze man on Manchester United’s left flank, but Gabriel Heinze may make a return to English shores soon. After two seasons at Real Madrid the Argentine defender is ready to move on, and there’s no shortage of clubs interested in him.
Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham appear to be the three major contenders for Heinze’s signature. Liverpool were deep in negotiations with him before his move to Real, but Manchester United blocked the move. He could finally get that move, but Liverpool will have to battle against two of their rivals.
