This past weekend saw one of the most exciting and dramatic ends to group action in an international tournament. While Group A was dominated by Spain, Group B was dominated by drama and action.
Spain and South Africa progressed out of Group A, while it’s Brazil and the United States of America coming out of Group B. The USA began the weekend at the bottom of their group, but a convincing 3-0 win by Brazil coupled with a shock 3-0 win for the US over Egypt meant Italy and the Egyptians were heading home early.
The semifinals should bring even more exciting and skillful football, with two of football’s powerhouses facing off against the tournament hosts and a team looking for redemption.
Spain has rolled over all competitors throughout the past year, and their good form has continued right into the Confederations Cup. David Villa and Fernando Torres have been too hot to handle for some of world football’s best defenses, and they’ll have yet another chance to progress to a final.
The United States stands in the way of a potential Spain v Brazil final, and Bob Bradley will desperately try to steal the spotlight. His team of youngsters may have been embarrassed in the first two games of the tournament, but their desire lifted them to an unexpected spot in these semifinals.
Spain should win this one quite comfortably, and if form is anything to go by then this should be a goalfest. Spain will be fielding a full strength lineup, while USA supporters and staff will still be trying to figure out what their full strength lineup is.
Prediction: Spain to win 3-0. Landon Donovan will show once again why he has never cut it in a big league, and other US “stars” such as DeMarcus Beasley will show that they’re not quite world class.
In what could be the blowout of the tournament, Brazil has the chance to square off against Spain or the USA in the final of the Confederations Cup. Only tournament hosts South Africa stand in their way, and judging by Brazil’s most recent result, next year’s World Cup hosts should be quite terrified of the threat that Brazil poses.
The 3-0 win over Italy means that Brazil are running riot at the moment, and Robinho and Kaka are certainly in the mood this month. South Africa’s only hope is the fact that they are playing on home soil, but the question is can the vuvuzelas drown out the sound of the samba beats? I don’t think so.
Prediction: Brazil, like Spain, will run rampant over lesser opposition and progress easily into the finals. I see a 4-0 win in this one, with Robinho getting on the scoresheet once again.
Who do you think will win? Have your say in the comments section below!
I realize your prediction was completely justifiable given Spain’s form. But still, you’ve got to admit, your prediction got owned ;)
world cup teams have changed dramatically ever since the last season of the world cup. Its hard to say because of what we saw with teams like Egypt and Italy on their last matches.History of big champions can only give us 45% true prediction nowdays the rest is unknown.I would say this semifinals would be the tough one with Spain 2 and USA 1,Brazil and RSA are going for penalties and Brazil will eventually win.Spain will be the champions and RSA will be the winners of the loosers final.
