barcelona-fansWhile us Premier League fans – and particular us United fans – are feeling a bit blue about yesterday’s Champions League final, as a football fan I can’t help but feel as if the match settled things quite nicely. Barcelona, with all their ebb and flow, cruised to a 2-0 victory over the English champions, and after the match even the most staunch United supporters had to sing the praise of Pep Guardiola and his side.

This fixture was one of the first finals in recent memory that truly pit the world’s two greatest teams against each other. While Liverpool won the Champions League a few years back, few – if any – people would have called them the best team in Europe. Sure, they won a few cup games, but if they were that good they’d have won their own domestic league. It’s the same story for when Monaco met Porto in the Champions League final – two good cup teams were in the game’s showpiece match.

This year, though, football fans were lucky enough to see the winners of the Premier League, Carling Cup, World Club Cup, and defending Champions League holders Manchester United against the Spanish champions, Copa Del Ray winners, and most in form team in football. There was no doubting that these were two sides at the top of the game.

Funny enough, even as a United fan, I couldn’t help but wonder if United was having the season that Barca was having. Sure, United ended up winning the Premiership in comfortable fashion, but all season long fans have been waiting to see United come out of their shell ala the 2006/07 season. The goals were just not flowing, United rarely seemed completely in control, while Barcelona were running rampant domestically and on the continental stage.

And Barca proved their class. There’s no doubt about it. While the two best teams in the world met in Rome on Wednesday, it was clear right from the start which side is the undisputed best in the world. Barcelona’s smooth passing and silky skills lifted them a deserved 2-0 victory, and it’s something we’ve all been predicting since the beginning of the season.

Barcelona has had an excellent season, and they are deservedly the champions of Europe, champions of Spain, and could quite possibly become champions of the world. Well done, Barca.

  1. Zain Alvi says:

To be honest, I am just one of those Barca haters who was forced to stand up and clap at the way they dominated in the Champions League Final. However, let’s not forget that Barca were lucky as heck (I am still convinced there was a conspiracy to avoid another all-English final) in the semifinal second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea dominated in that game and with that theory in mind, Chelsea could very well be the best side in the world. Sure, they might not have won much in the last couple of years, but that’s largely because of the coaching turmoil at the club.

But coming back to the last question you posed, I doubt Barca will retain their title. This is merely my opinion, but I obviously feel that other teams will give them a lot of trouble and this may sound kind of funny, but I really think that Real Madrid will rebuild over the summer, which will make things very tough for Barca even on the domestic level.
