What’s Going on Around Europe?

By | 15th May 2009

yaya-toureWe all know that the Premier League is coming down to the wire with two matches remaining, but here’s what going on around the rest of the continent:

There are three matches remaining for clubs in La Liga, but like the Premiership, one team is stealing all of the headlines. Barcelona have just won the Copa del Rey, and are now just one point away from clinching the La Liga crown. If Real Madrid fail to beat Villareal before Barca kickoff, though, the title is heading to the Camp Nou without a ball even being kicked. All of this means that Barcelona are on the verge of a historical treble: their domestic cup has already been won, their domestic league title is a point away, and Pep Guardiola and his boys square off against Manchester United on the 27th of May for the Champions League final. Wow!

  1. Barcelona – 35 GP – 86 Points
  2. Real Madrid – 35 GP – 78 Points
  3. Sevilla – 35 GP – 63 Points
  4. Valencia – 35 GP – 59 Points

Lyon’s dynasty appears to finally be coming to a close in the French Ligue 1, with Marseille leading the way. Marseille and Bordeaux are tied at the top of the table with three games remaining in the season, and more surprisingly Paris St. Germain is beginning to bring back the glory days in the French capital and are finally within the top four of the table. It’s anyone’s guess who will eventually win the league, but one more point for either Marseille or Bordeaux will mathematically rule Lyon out of the ┬átitle race. Marseille’s goal difference is two better than Bordeaux’s, so that could be the deciding factor.

  1. Marseille – 35 GP – 71 Points
  2. Bordeaux – 35 GP – 71 Points
  3. Lyon – 35 GP – 64 Points
  4. Paris St. Germain – 35 GP – 63 Points

The final season of the Serie A as we know it pits the two sides from Milan against each other. Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan side leads the way once again, but AC Milan sit in second place – just 7 points back with three games to go. Okay, so chances are they won’t catch up, and most likely Inter Milan will wrap up yet another title, but there’s still plenty to play for. Genoa and Fiorentina are still battling for that fourth Champions League spot, while Roma sits in 6th looking up in disappointment.

  1. Inter Milan – 35 GP – 78 Points
  2. AC Milan – 35 GP – 71 Points
  3. Juventus – 35 GP – 67 Points
  4. Fiorentina – 35 GP – 64 Points
