vidic-and-rioIt may not be quite as bad as offering one’s self to the devil, but if the reports are true then Nemanja Vidic has apparently offered his services to Barcelona. Vidic has been a subject of speculation in the past, with AC Milan among his list of suitors. On top of all of this, Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo also declares that Vidic has told Manchester United about his desire to leave Old Trafford and a move to Spain is imminent.

This rumor comes as a surprise to many supporters, but all of the signs have been there for a while with the Serbian defender. In an interview earlier this season Vidic criticized the English weather (rain never killed anyone), the English food (okay, he’s right about this one), and the atmosphere around the country (apparently it’s too “dull” and “industrial” for the Serb). His wife supposedly echoes all of these sentiments, and it is her deep sadness that is forcing Nemanja Vidic out of Old Trafford and into the sunny green pastures of Spain.

From a footballing standpoint, this is a shock. Vidic has just enjoyed his best season personally, and United aren’t far behind. With two Premier League crowns in the past two seasons and another one very likely, the defender is enjoying immense success on the club level. To add to that, a Champions League victory last season is being followed up by a potential Champions League repeat (although Arsenal may have a bit to say about that later on today). On a purely footballing level, Vidic is in the right place at the right time – United’s team is full of young talent that will only get better.

While these rumors could very well be true, the departure of Vidic still remains uncertain. Sir Alex Ferguson has stated on many occasions that the one regret he has in his career was getting rid of Jaap Stam – the massive Dutch defender that led United to European and English success. Vidic appears to be the true replacement for Stam, and Fergie would be very hesitant to split up the combination of Rio Ferdinand and Vidic.

I, for one, am hoping that the man nominated for the PFA Player of the Year remains in England and leads United to trophy after trophy.

Should Vidic stay at United or is a move to Barca appropriate? Have your say in the comments section below!

  1. Andy says:

Probably the right time to go. He’ll have won the Premier League and Champions League with Man Utd. Why not move on? Try your hand in the Spanish league.. for Man U he’s been there, done that. It might be time for something new. Hopefully Ronaldo follows him.
