drogba-goalThe Real Madrid rumor mill is in full flight once again, although this time it’s a Chelsea player that is at the center of the speculation. Eduardo Garcia, who is running for the Real Madrid presidency, has told the media that he has an agreement in place that will bring the Ivorian striker to Spain if he wins the election. This follows a long line of presidential candidates that have made promises, including last summer’s controversial “agreement” between Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo.

While Drogba’s season at Stamford Bridge has been interrupted by injuries, suspensions, and managerial changes, there’s no doubting his ability. The Chelsea striker is full of pace, finesse, and knows how to put the ball in the back of the net. Any fan around the Premier League – and any Premiership defender – will tell you that Drogba is an intimidating figure to play against. Even though his strike partner Nicolas Anelka has grabbed all the headlines (and all the goals) this season, the Ivorian’s goal tally has never failed to impress.

So with presidential hopeful Garcia’s latest claim, what are Chelsea and Premier League fans to think? First of all, I’ve grown sick and tired of Real Madrid’s persistent claims about signing other players. What Garcia fails to recognize is that Drogba is under contract with Chelsea Football Club. He can have all the agreements in the world with the player, but unless he gets consent from the club then Didier will remain a Chelsea player next season.

On top of that, Real Madrid have constantly been linked with players who are at more successful clubs (we’re talking about present-day – it’s all fun and games that Real are the most successful side ever, but  what is that doing for them today?). For Drogba and the rest of his Chelsea teammates, a more pressing issue right now is the upcoming Champions League semifinal clash. It’s the second straight year that Chelsea are eyeing a spot in Europe’s most coveted competition, and Real Madrid will have to watch from home on a television. Meanwhile, their Spanish counterparts (who are clearly better domestically and on a continental stage) are setting the world alight with their exciting and entertaining football. Since the turn of the century, Real Madrid have lagged behind their Spanish and European rivals.

As far as I’m concerned, Didier Drogba is at the right club for him. If he can dedicate himself to the Chelsea cause, keep his head down and work hard, then success will follow. Chelsea are in the midst of European success and are finally beginning to push for domestic honors as well, and at the end of the season Drogba will need to realize that he had a chance (and just might win) the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup – and don’t rule Chelsea out for next season’s Premier League crown.

Real Madrid – focus on your own football. You’ve already got the talent, now get the ball rolling. Didier Drogba and other footballers around the world who dream of Madrid’s money – how do you want to be remembered? I’d go for something that includes some trophies.

  1. If anything, Drogba would join Mourinho at Inter Milan…
