Much has already been said of Manchester United’s thrilling comeback against Tottenham this past weekend, but more important than the result I witnessed something great happening at United. For the first time this season, United fans got the chance to see Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney, and Cristiano Ronaldo all on the pitch at the same time and all firing on all cylinders.
By all means, this isn’t the first time that these four superstars have been on the pitch at the same time, but at long last everything seemed to click. Wayne Rooney seems to be coming into his own in his new free role out wide, with cuts into the middle mixed in to perfection. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo seems to have gone from winger to attacking central midfielder, and his pace and skill is perfectly suited to his new position just off the front two. The Portuguese winger is still getting out wide a lot, but like Rooney he’s once again being afforded room to roam. Berbatov up top offers pure skill, and his touch leading up to Rooney’s second goal against Tottenham says it all about the man. As for Tevez, the man from Argentina has always been the workhorse of this squad, and his introduction to the match on Saturday fired up all of his teammates – and the crowd.
These four men all have very unique and valuable traits. Against Tottenham we saw that when times are rough, with all four of these men something will happen. Down 2-0 at halftime, Fergie gambled, and that gamble paid off.
With less than a month remaining in the 2008/09 season, football fans around the world should be hoping and praying that Sir Alex Ferguson unleashes all four of these men whenever possible. United’s football in the second half was a joy to behold, and the match overall was a spectacle that any fan of football would enjoy.
Starting against Arsenal tomorrow, I would absolutely love to see the United of old back in action. Free flowing, attacking football at its finest.
