martin-o-neillWith their dreams of Champions League spots all but shattered, but UEFA Cup spots already solidified, Aston Villa and Everton will still not be coasting through the last seven matches of the season. On Sunday they will meet at Villa Park in a match that promises to be a battle.

Aston Villa stumble into this match with only 1 point in their last 6 matches. Without looking, I’m sure you could have guessed that Villa is last on the form table. They have lost four straight matches, and five of their last six overall. Their last win came all the way back on February 7th. Right now they will do anything for a victory. They could have gotten that much needed victory last weekend at Old Trafford when they were up 2-1 with 30 minutes left, but poor defense led to a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in injury time. Not only that, but they are only 1 point up on Everton for the 5th spot, so there is that much more of an incentive to get a win at home.

Everton, meanwhile, are playing solid football at the moment. They have eleven points over their last six matches, which leaves them 8th on the form table. A win over Aston Villa on Sunday would move them into 5th on the Premier League table, and their recent form has proven that they are extremely deserving of that 5th spot. Just last week they finished off a determined Wigan side 4-0, a team that is fighting for the last UEFA Cup spot. Everton proved that they were the far superior team, and they can only get better if the club stays intact for next season.

Both sides have proven that they can score goals, but Everton have just been doing it on a more consistent basis lately. Aston Villa may have lost last week, but they were still able to score two goals at Old Trafford against a defense that has been arguably the best all season long. Something has to give if either team is going to walk away a winner. Sure we can make all the predictions that we want about Sunday’s matchup, but either way, it is going to be a fantastic match to watch. There are plenty of interesting matches happening this weekend, but this is definitely the match that I am looking forward to the most.

As much as i love Aston Villa, I really want Everton to win this one and finish off the season that way. They have been far more consistent.
