With Guus Hiddink now firmly sitting in the Chelsea hotseat, his ambitions with Chelsea are beginning to show. Yesterday the Dutchman informed the press that he believes Chelsea still has a lot to play for, and that the Premier League title could still find its way to Stamford Bridge in 2009.
Hiddink remarked: “They are in several races. The FA Cup is there, there is the Champions League, but also the league.
“There is a ten-point difference but if you look into the past of this league, and of other league as well, some things can happen during the final stages of the championship.”
While it may look unlikely at the moment, I firmly believe what Guus Hiddink is saying. While I don’t think the Premiership crown will ultimately end with Chelsea this season, I do think that they are still in a great position to challenge Manchester United from now until May. The squad is in place, and with Hiddink’s new regime at the club everything is looking up.
There is no denying the talent that is on display at Stamford Bridge. Under Scolari, this talent rarely shown through, but with Hiddink’s no-nonsense approach to football, it could only be a matter of time before Chelsea’s underperforming stars start proving themselves. Hiddink’s early suggestions of success shows that he refuses to sit around and rest on his laurels. Instead, Hiddink will instill a winning mentality at the club and reject complacency from his squad members.
While I believe there were better managers out there, I do think that Hiddink can still do a job at the club. One thing’s for certain: Hiddink’s arrival at Chelsea will shake things up both at Stamford Bridge and also around the Premiership.
