Portsmouth Needs a Hero

By | 12th February 2009

crouch-portsmouthI’ll be the first to admit that before the season started, I was looking forward to seeing the 2008/09 Portsmouth team assert themselves within the top ten. I’ll also to be the first to admit that Portsmouth have been the second most disappointing side this season (second only to Tottenham). Now, with Tony Adams out the door and countless stars sold, Portsmouth need a hero.

We’ve seen it before. Alan Shearer was Newcastle’s hero, Eric Cantona often came up as Manchester United’s hero, and in last season’s Championship Playoff Final Dean Windass was Hull’s hero. All of these men came up huge when it mattered. Whether their club was on the verge of another title, on the verge of relegation, or on the verge of promotion, these are the special players that lift a club to that next level. In this case, Portsmouth are on the hunt for someone to drag them free of the relegation scrap.

So who can be this hero? Before the season I would’ve told you that Pompey didn’t need a lone hero figure. They had Sulley Muntari, Jermain Defoe, Lassana Diarra and company to form a solid squad. It appeared as if any of their stars were faltering, their was enough support to pick up the slack.

This, obviously, has not been the case. Portsmouth players have been putting in mediocre performances, and even when they’ve played well they’ve collapsed towards the end of matches. Look no further than their most recent loss to Liverpool. Up 2-1 and heading towards an integral victory, Pompey’s defense succumbed to the threat of Fernando Torres and conceded two more goals.

If Portsmouth want to stay up this season, they need a hero. They need a talisman that can lift them up the table, inspire those around him, and be a catalyst for future successes. Whether that player is that the club already, I’m not sure. If not, the Portsmouth board needs to hire a manager who is capable of riling up the entire squad. If not, fans at Fratton Park can be looking forward to seeing the likes of Crystal Palace and Blackpool next season.

i think portsmouth need a DM and RB and one CD . As far as RB is concerned i think they should go for anthony reveillere and as far as DM is concerned they should go for walter gargano from napoli … both of them won't be too expensive …

  2. See, that's the thing – they really don't need a miracle. The squad is in place. They've got a strong back four, with a more than capable goalkeeper, and Peter Crouch is still capable of providing adequate firepower up front. They just are lacking inspiration.

Hero? That's an understatement. They need a miracle and little bit of the Holy Spirit on their side to save their dismal season.
