beckham-ac-milanWhile David Beckham is a forgotten man in the English Premier League, the world’s most popular man is still causing controversy around Europe.

When he signed for the Los Angeles Galaxy, he promised to make a splash into the American sports market. Being here in America, I witnessed the entire episode first hand, including seeing the reception he received in person at Gillette Stadium just outside Boston, Massachusetts. While MLS crowds around the country booed him, he put people in seats. David Beckham – in America – is the player that everyone loves to hate.

Because of the Beckham factor, everyone hypothesized that “soccer” in the USA would take off. Alas, it did not. Instead, Beckham played down to his opposition, and had few worldclass performances in a Galaxy shirt. When AC Milan approached Major League Soccer with a loan proposition, the entire league was wondering how a slightly above average player in the MLS could perform in the Serie A. Nevermind at one of the world’s biggest clubs.

To his credit, though, Beckham has performed extremely well in Italy; far exceeding any expectations. It has now gotten to the point that the Rossoneri are desperate for Beckham’s signature on a permanent basis, and the former England international is craving a move to the fashion capital of the world (or perhaps it’s Posh that is craving that move?). Milan represents a way back into Fabio Capello’s England squad, and Becks appears adamant about making the trip to South Africa in 2010 (and not just as a spectator).

So, after a summer of the Cristiano Ronaldo saga, a January of the Kaka saga, we are now entering the period of the David Beckham saga. As a football fan, I’d love to see Becks in Italy on a permanent basis, as his work rate and control of the ball puts him a step above the rest of the competition, even in the twilight of his career. Beckham still has something to offer on the national stage, and England’s right flank is just calling out for him.

Let’s hope that the David Beckham saga will come to an end soon. Both parties clearly want the move, and now it’s time for the LA Galaxy to put football over business, get the fee that they want, and call it a day. It was fun while it lasted, but David Beckham was never going to single handedly turn the sport around here in America. Becks, best of luck in Italy.
