This Sunday will bring us a match-up between Chelsea and Liverpool, but at the end of the day it might only let us know that the winner will win second place in the Premier League.
Manchester United is showing their worth as being the best team in the Premier League this season, as they were once in the fourth spot as they have gone 925 minutes without giving up a goal and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar set a new record of 11 successive clean sheets. With all of the distractions that Manchester United had to deal with at the beginning of the season (such as dealing with Cristiano Ronaldo possibly going to Real Madrid as he was nursing an ankle injury), the team was able to keep it together and stay near the top of the table and put themselves into position to win three league titles in as many years.
The same can’t be said about Liverpool and Chelsea. Liverpool had to deal with Fernando Torres getting a hamstring injury and there was some bickering as to whether Torres was injured by training methods during training with the Spain national team. And then we have the Chelsea saga and this season seems more like a soap opera rather than a football season in which they should be focusing on winning a league title along with a Champions League title. Just like Manchester United had to deal with the Ronaldo talk linking him to Real Madrid, there was talk that their superstar Didier Drogba could be linked to Inter Milan (and then more recently to Manchester City).
The difference between these two stories is that Manchester United, along with Sir Alex Ferguson, always came out to the public with a fierce tone that Ronaldo would never be leaving. You don’t get that sense from Chelsea. Are they looking to keep their star player or would they be okay with dangling Drogba to the highest bidder? This is why I personally feel that Manchester United is indeed the class of the Premier League this season: when a crisis hit the team, it was quickly settled and they went on about their business. Granted, the game on Sunday February 1st, 2009 will be a great match between Chelsea and Liverpool, but it will be a match to see who ends up in second place in the Premier League.
