Ricky Sbragia must surely be thinking that he is living the life of luxury. Since taking over from Roy Keane, Sbragia has slowly been leading Sunderland from the bottom of the Premier League to the edge of the top half. Sunderland’s 1-0 win against Fulham tonight propels them up to 11th in the table, and just five points away from a potential European spot.
Kenwyne Jones, just hours after signing a new contract that keeps him at the Stadium of Light, once again led the Black Cats to victory. His goal in the 55th minute was enough to see Sunderland pick up the three points.
The combination of Jones and Djibril Cisse has been flourishing since Jones’ return to health, and Sunderland fans must be lipping their lips at the prospect of European football next season. While there is still a lot of hard work to be done, if Sunderland can maintain their recent good form then a UEFA Cup spot is not out of the question.
On the flip side, since the table is so close this year, relegation also looms large. In the 2008/09 Premier League, if you’re fighting for a UEFA Cup spot, then chances are you’re also in the relegation battle. While six points separates Sunderland from that coveted 7th place spot, they remain just five points away from the bottom of the table.
While I don’t think Sunderland will wrap up a UEFA Cup spot this season, I also don’t think they’ll be in the drop zone come May.
