portoWhile Premiership Talk focuses primarily on the English Premier League, from time to time we’ll also feature news on other leagues. With half of the Liga Sagres campaign finished, Portuguese fans are once again witnessing another exciting season.

After 14 weeks of action, Benfica currently holds the top spot with 29 points. Going into the year there were very high expectations for the Lisbon based club as club legend Rui Costa took on the role of President of Soccer Operations. He made some noise in the summer transfer window securing both Jose Reyes (all you Arsenal fans certainly remember him) and David Suazo on loan. He also secured permanent moves for Carlos Martins, Pablo Aimar, and Javier Balboa. Along with the new players, Costa also brought in a new coach in the form of Spaniard Quique Flores. Benfica started the year off well in the UEFA Cup by defeating a very good Napoli side, but then played very poorly in the group stage and has been knocked out of the competition.

Sporting is in second place with 29 points with pretty much the same squad from last season. After a slow start to the campaign they have started to pick up their form in recent weeks. They have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League and will be playing Bayern Munich.

FC Porto are in third place with 28 points. Porto has been very inconsistent this year. They have shown signs of once again being champions but have also played poorly at times. Like Sporting, they have also qualified for the last 16 in the Champions League and will be playing Atletico Madrid.

The surprise of the campaign has certainly been Leixoes. The small club is currently in fourth with 26 points. Hopefully they can keep it up and fight for a place in Europe. Other teams still in the title race are Nacional (5th place, 24 points) and Braga (6th place, 23 points, and still in the UEFA Cup).
