wigan-beat-tottenhamLooking back at last season, there were many twists and turns to the Premier League season. For Wigan, it was a rather emotional season. Rooted in the relegation battle in the fall, Wigan fans rejoiced when Steve Bruce resigned from Birmingham to take control of the Wigan reins again. Steve Bruce successfully steered the club clear of relegation, and a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in April ensured safety.

The 14th place finish was sufficient for fans and board alike last year, and more of the same was expected this season. Instead, Steve Bruce and his side are surprising everyone and currently sit in 7th place. The prospect of European football at the JJB next season is becoming evermore clear, and Wigan fans are surely licking their lips at the possibility.

Led by Egyptian sensation Amr Zaki and his ten league goals, Wigan currently find themselves in excellent form. Out of their last six matches, Wigan have picked up five wins. That’s 15 points out of a possible 18!

A large part of this success certainly has to be attributed to Bruce. The former Manchester United has made the most of his limited resources, and the loan deal of Amr Zaki could go down as the signing of the season. As long as Manchester United wins the Carling Cup, and one of the top six Premiership teams win the FA Cup, then the seventh placed team will enter the UEFA Cup next season – which right now looks like Wigan Athletic.

It’s a breath of fresh air to see the “smaller” clubs like Wigan performing well in the league. While Hull are finally hitting a slump, Phil Brown and the Tigers can take heart in Wigan’s valiant displays, and it proves that the Premier League is still the most exciting and competitive league in the world, despite the vast financial differences between the top and bottom clubs.
