Welcome to Part 2 of this Weekend Preview!
West Brom v. Manchester City (13:30): City go into this game praying for a win. A disappointing home defeat to Everton last weekend leaves the blue side of Manchester in disarray and towards the bottom of the table. With the wealth of riches at their disposal, there is no excuse for such poor performances. Luckily for Mark Hughes, West Brom are a team that City really should beat, even if the questionable Robinho can’t regain full fitness in time for the match. City players will need to play their hearts out to keep their places in January, with every player and their mother rumored to be joining the club once the transfer window opens. Like his players, Mark Hughes is also fighting for his job, so City should do enough to overcome a weaker West Brom side.
Newcastle v. Tottenham (15:00): Both of these teams may be sitting way down on the table, but I see a fantastic match-up in front of me. Newcastle showed that they have what it takes to put together a great performance, evidenced by their 3-0 victory last week at Portsmouth. Meanwhile, Tottenham also had a solid last match against Manchester United where they were able to come out with a 0-0 draw. Whose momentum will continue into this weekend? I can’t say for sure. No matter what, this will be a great match to watch as two teams who have completely turned their seasons around do battle on Sunday. I can’t see either team coming away with a definitive victory. I’m going to call this one a draw because this match-up is just too good to disrespect either side.
Arsenal v. Liverpool (16:00): This is obviously the Match-Up of the Weekend. No team has yet to break away from the pack. There are still 4 legitimate contenders for the title this season. Arsenal and Liverpool are two of those teams. If Liverpool wins this game they could start to put some distance between themselves and some of the other contenders, but an Arsenal victory would help to make the race that much more interesting. I would love to pick a winner for this team, but I have no idea what Arsenal squad is going to decide to show up. Will it be the one that beat Manchester United or the one that lost to Aston Villa and Stoke? I really have no clue. Liverpool is playing more consistently at the moment as we can see by their first place standing in the table, but this match will not be easy. I’m going to have to call this one a draw. It’s at the Emirates, but Liverpool is playing better. Probably a 1-1 draw.
Everton v. Chelsea (20:00): Can David Moyes do it again? Can he do it with the help of an excited home crowd? We’ll have to see. What I’m talking about is the 4-6-0 tactic that Moyes employed for their match last week against Manchester City. The result? A 1-0 win. Could it work this week against a very powerful side in Chelsea? I look at it this way: Moyes is going to need all the defense he can get. It may not get them the victory, but it could lead to a draw against Chelsea who is sitting in 2nd place on the table. It may have worked last week, but I can’t see it working again. I don’t think the strikers would be too happy either if they all had to sit on the bench for another 90 minutes with no action. I don’t see why Chelsea wouldn’t win this match. They are just too powerful of a side, and it doesn’t seem like Everton will be able to match up with them too easily. Chelsea with the victory to round off this weekend of matches.
