Michael Owen: Should I Stay, or Should I Go?  | read this item

michael_owen_signs_400x300Michael Owen is currently contemplating the age old question that The Clash posed to the rest of the world in 1982: Should I stay or should I go?

Yesterday Newcastle reportedly offered Owen a new contract. Terms are undisclosed at the moment, but it is believed that Owen’s representatives have received the offer and now Newcastle will have to wait until Owen comes to a decision. Newcastle manager, Joe Kinnear, has already let Owen know that he will not be transferring during the January transfer window, and the club will not be accepting any offers for him, no matter how tempting.

This is my advice to Michael Owen: Stay put and play your heart out until the end of the season when you can leave the club on a free transfer if you really want to leave. You may feel that Newcastle is the place where you want to finish off your career, but no matter what, stay loyal to the team that you play for until you play for a different team. As we’ve witnessed this year, Cristiano Ronaldo may still be thinking about Real Madrid, and that could be what is affecting his production. Owen should not allow this to happen to him. His current team is his number one priority – no exceptions. Since this is the case, Owen should make sure that he makes a positive statement if he decides to leave the club come summertime.

Chelsea are said to be interested in acquiring the Newcastle striker. What would normally be a 5 hour trek to visit The Clash could turn into a walk down the street next season. Only time will tell, but if I were Owen I would make the move to a bigger club for a couple reasons. First is the potential transfer of fellow striker Obafemi Martins. Other clubs are starting to realize what Martins truly has to bring to the table. I think if Owen truly wants to stay with the club, he should definitely sign sooner rather than later. I think him signing would have a great influence on Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures. Not only would it help motivate them to stay out of relegation, but it could also help them continue to climb up the table.

So let’s go Owen. Don’t be so indecisive like the Clash and make up your mind already.
