How will Sunderland fill the void left by former manager Roy Keane?
As of right now, there is no clear cut favorite. Just this morning, former Sunderland boss and current Thailand national team manager, Peter Reid was said to be interested in the job. However, after being interviewed following Thailand’s 6-0 victory over Laos, Reid was quoted as saying: “I haven’t asked for the job at Sunderland. I have been there once and loved it, it’s a great place, but I am enjoying working here.”
So what does this mean for Sunderland?
For one, it means that current interim manager Ricky Sbragia could be at the helm for an extended amount of time. I’m sure he won’t be too upset, especially if he can rally the team and get some points. Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn and his board are said to be looking at at least 30 potential candidates for the job. Quinn said that within the next two days his board will meet and start to sift through everybody.
It looks like Sbragia will be the boss for at least Sunderland’s upcoming match against West Brom, as a replacement seems to be unlikely by Saturday. Sbragia won’t be doing it alone though, as coach Neil Bailey and current player, Dwight Yorke, will be assisting him in the decision-making process.
Although a replacement probably will not be appointed soon, Sunderland will look to move on. In their first game without Roy Keane, they brought Manchester United to the brink at Old Trafford on Saturday. Even though they eventually lost the game in stoppage time, it showed critics that they were capable of preventing this from becoming a distraction. It sure will be interesting to see what will happen in the days and weeks to come.
