Manchester United took another step towards the top as they narrowly beat cross-town rivals Manchester City. Wayne Rooney supplied the only goal of the day as he notched up his 100th career goal for the Red Devils.
United played a large part of the second half a man down as Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off following a second yellow card for an intentional hand ball. The Portuguese winger claimed a whistle was blown, so he put his hands up to catch the corner kick. Howard Webb did not hesitate to eject the winger. The refereeing was suspect all evening as Webb gave in to the crowd on many occasions, and then constantly gave United make-up calls to amend his errors.
This match really could have gone either way. United had large spells of dominance in the first half while City pushed forward in the second. Shaun Wright-Phillips showed his industry all match long and was unlucky to be on the losing side. For United, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick controlled things in the middle, winning many midfield battles.
With a minute remaining in stoppage time, Joe Hart was almost chipped from 40 yards by Wayne Rooney, but the young keeper did just enough to keep it out.
This win puts pressure on Chelsea and Liverpool ahead of their clashes against Arsenal and West Ham, respectively.
