Roy Keane’s Black Cats side slipped further down the table following a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Bolton. The home side grabbed a 1-0 lead after 11 minutes when Djibril Cisse fired home from 16 yards out. The lead was short lived, though, as Matty Taylor got the better of Pascal Chimbonda in the air and equalized for Bolton just six minutes after going behind. Four minutes later Gary Cahill dealt Sunderland another blow as he made it 2-1 for Bolton. Djibril Cisse then put Sunderland back into contention with a clinical scissor finish, before the assistant referee flagged for a previous foul. Cisse’s celebrations didn’t last long. Johan Elmander closed the first half’s scoring with his 39th minute goal.
After the break Sunderland looked a bit more compact. The Black Cats were beginning to move the ball but still could not find a way through the tough Bolton side. Finally, in the 55th minute Johan Elmander clinched the match with his second of the day and Bolton’s fourth. Roy Keane looked an indomitable figure on the touchline and Sunderland fans started heading for their cars.
