Two of the northeast’s most bitter rivals fought to a 0-0 draw today in a match plagued by fog. There was no real quality in this match as Newcastle were clearly happy with a draw and Middlesbrough never looked like finding the back of the net.
The only real chance of the match came through Obafemi Martins. The pacy Nigerian striker hit the crossbar on 35 mintues. Sanli Tuncay gave the home fans something to cheer about as he put on a masterclass of footwork in the first half. Afonso Alves also had a few chances, with his closest blazing just inches over the bar.
At the end of the day, though, the two sides played to a bore draw and will be looking towards their next matches. Joe Kinnear celebrates his contract extension with yet another point (Newcastle have become the draw specialists) and Gareth Southgate’s side remain comfortably ahead of the relegation battle.
