Berbatov is a Red Devil!

By | 2nd September 2008

BerbatovBulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov finally realized his dream of signing for Manchester United yesterday, although the day was not without its twists and turns.

In the early hours of deadline day, news came in that Manchester City had been taken over, and with it came a huge £34 million offer for Berbatov. With not a peep from Old Trafford, it emerged that this transfer was going to be very complicated. With City looking as though they would sign the striker ahead of local rivals United, Berbatov was on a plane to Manchester. Whether on his way to Old Trafford or Eastlands, no one was sure of. But up popped Fergie to whisk away the hitman from Manchester airport. He even underwent a medical, whilst Spurs chairman Daniel Levy stated United did NOT have permission to speak to the Bulgarian, and then reports from Spain suggested that Berbatov could be the subject of a £36.5 million bid from Real Madrid. Very tense stuff indeed.

However, when Berbatov arrived at Old Trafford, things calmed down a bit. Madrid stated they wouldn’t be signing anyone and City were busy with bids for every decent striker in world football. Plus, they were in the process of gazumping Chelsea in their bid for Brazilian star Robinho. Then, at 12:25am, the signing was confirmed, with starlet Frazier Campbell heading to White Hart Lane on a season long loan, whilst another part of the agreement was that Spurs dropped their complaint against United to the Premier League, accusing them of tapping up Berbatov earlier in the summer. Berbatov will wear the number 9 shirt.

Now that Berbatov has joined Rooney and Tevez, along with Manucho who is recovering from injury, United fans now have the mouth watering prospect of Berbatov strutting his stuff at the home of the champions. He is likely to make his debut against Liverpool at Anfield, not only perfect timing to sign, but Liverpool duo Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres could miss the giant clash due to injuries. I personally believe that Berbatov is a long awaited piece of the puzzle Ferguson is putting together. When Manchester United’s midfield, including Cristiano Ronaldo, return from their respective injuries, they will really enjoy playing off the Bulgarian.

Berbatov’s signing will send tremors through the rest of the Premiership. I can’t wait.
