The 31st of August is a very special day to football fans around the world. It’s the last day of transfer season (aka “silly season”), meaning whoever is on your favorite club today will be with you until at least January 1st. All of the summer’s drama and all of the speculation ends today as moves are made literally every minute around the world.
So, what do Premier League fans have to look forward to today? Manchester United fans will be hitting refresh on their computers all day waiting for confirmation that Dimitar Berbatov has joined the club. Meanwhile, Chelsea fans are curious to see if Felipe Scolari can rekindle his relationship with Robinho in London. Up in northern England Michael Owen has been offered a new contract at Newcastle. If he doesn’t accept that, who knows where he might end up? Are Stoke really after Jermaine Pennant?
With all of this speculation waiting to be answered, a few deals have already been concluded today. Manchester City have signed Pablo Zabaleta from Espanyol, finally getting their man after months of waiting. Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has announced that Alexei Smertin and Collins John are available for transfer today as he looks to trim his squad of deadweight. Many more lower league and lower key transfers have concluded, so it’s only a matter of time before money trickles its way upward and Premier League transfers get into full flow.
Here’s to an exciting next eleven hours of silly season!
