Kevin NolanLong gone are the days where Bolton were a side who struck fear into many of the Premier League’s greatest sides. Under Sam Allardyce, the rough side from northern England used to put up a fight 38+ games each season – no matter who the opponent was. The side was one that went to war every 90 minutes on the pitch; without much technical ability it came down to heart and desire. When Big Sam left the Reebok Stadium, it seems like he took Bolton’s heart with him.

This season was supposed to bring new hope to Wanderers fans. After the disappointing fear of relegation last season, the addition of skilled players like Johan Elmander was supposed to help Bolton back towards the middle of the table. Alas, they are already showing signs of being a faltering club once again.

With most of their key players in the side tonight at the Reebok, Bolton fell 2-1 at the hands of Northampton in the Carling Cup. Crashing out of the tournament in only the second round certainly wasn’t what most fans expected – especially to lower league opposition. With this tournament their only real good chance at qualifying for Europe next season, boss Gary Megson will be wondering what he has to do to fire up his troops.

With a home match against Premier League newboys West Bromwich Albion this weekend, Megson will be doing everything in his power to ensure a victory. With one win out of two games already, Bolton still have a chance to get the season off on the right foot, but they’ll need to do the business at home.

Hopefully Bolton can pull everything together this season. The squad is in place, and the Premier League would greatly benefit from another club putting up a fight.
