With a £9 million for Peter Crouch already rejected, Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is insistent on signing Chelsea’s Shaun Wright-Phillips. A player who was once one of the brightest prospects in England, a few seasons on the Stamford Bridge bench has put a speed bump on SWP’s career.
Portsmouth impressed many fans last year as they were strong contenders for a European spot until the African Cup of Nations rolled around and half the team left. With a few key signings they could find themselves easily in the top 7 in the Premiership. With players such as Sulley Muntari and Jermain Defoe already plying their trade on the south coast, signings like Peter Crouch and Shaun Wright-Phillips could be the missing pieces.
Pompey fans must be drooling at the prospect of having wingers like SWP and Niko Kranjcar sending crosses in to the giant Peter Crouch or talented midfielders like Sulley Muntari or Papa Bouba Diop sending through balls to the pacy Jermain Defoe. A solid backline consisting of veteran forces like David James and Sol Campbell means that Portsmouth are very close to becoming a top side.
